Welcome to the official project site for the development of an Illinois Statewide Public Transportation Plan. The success of this planning effort is made possible through the Illinois Department of Transportation. We welcome your interest and encourage you to participate via this web portal and in the public meetings.
Illinois has a very diverse public transportation system. Public transportation services range from extremely large scale operations under the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and its service boards - Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, and Pace - to single rural county services.
Illinois has 16 urban and 47 rural public transit systems and more than 280 nonprofits that provide specialized transit services to the elderly and people with disabilities. While almost all counties in Illinois have some form of public transportation service located within their borders, not all areas of these counties have equal access to public transportation. With all these public transit systems, a more unified, cohesive plan is desired for a more effective public transportation network.
The Illinois Statewide Public Transportation Plan is meant to develop a vision for an integrated public transportation system that provides mobility and access to everyone living in, working in, and visiting Illinois.
After assessing existing public transportation services and developing a system inventory, the Plan will identify gaps and need for future services, and propose concrete strategies for meeting the corresponding capital, facility and service needs.
The Plan process is structured to be interactive, with key input from the public. Public meetings will be held in numerous locations throughout the state during the two year study, which has an expected completion date in December of 2016. We welcome your input regarding your thoughts on public transportation and what future services should be provided in your community.
BE PART OF THE PROCESS! Your input is valuable and important to the success of this project. For ways to stay involved, check the GET INVOLVED section of this site.
